What kava is

Kava is a beverage made from the root of Piper methysticum, a plant native to the South Pacific. For centuries it has been prepared communally — root pounded, steeped in water, strained, and shared — as part of ceremony, negotiation, and simple hospitality.

02 Learn

How it's traditionally prepared

Traditional preparation is water-based and cold: the ground root is kneaded in water inside a cloth strainer until the liquid turns opaque and earthy. The result is a drink, not a concentrate. Our formulation follows the same water-extraction principle.

Traditional water preparation

  1. Root is dried and ground.
  2. Ground root is kneaded in cool water inside a cloth strainer.
  3. Liquid turns opaque and earthy — the root solids are strained out.
  4. The result is a drink, not a concentrate.

What people report

Most people describe a settled, sociable, unhurried feeling — a slight tingle on the tongue, loosened shoulders, an easier conversation. Effects vary widely by person, serving size, and whether you've eaten.

Noble vs. tudei kava

Not all kava is the same. Noble cultivars have a long record of traditional use. Tudei ('two-day') varieties and non-root plant parts are cheaper and are associated with longer, less pleasant effects and greater risk. We use noble root only.

Noble root vs. tudei material

Noble root — what we use

  • Long record of traditional use
  • Root material only
  • Cultivar confirmed before a run

Tudei and non-root material

  • Cheaper to source
  • Associated with longer, less pleasant effects
  • Not used in Easy Days

05 Learn

Using it responsibly

  • Start with a partial serving your first time and wait a full hour.
  • Never combine kava with alcohol, sedatives, benzodiazepines, or other depressants.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery after use.
  • Avoid if you have liver conditions or take medication metabolized by the liver.
  • Not for use if pregnant, nursing, or under 21.

Responsible use

  • Adults 21+ only
  • Start with a partial serving, then wait a full hour
  • Never with alcohol or sedatives
  • Not before driving or operating tools
  • Not if pregnant or nursing

The liver question

Rare cases of liver injury have been reported in connection with kava use, often involving non-noble material, extract concentrates, or concurrent alcohol or medication use. We take it seriously: noble root only, water extraction, tested lots, and clear labeling. If you develop jaundice, dark urine, persistent nausea, or abdominal pain, stop use and see a physician.

Liver caution — stop and see a physician

  • Jaundice
  • Dark urine
  • Persistent nausea
  • Abdominal pain

Rare liver injury reports are associated with non-noble material, concentrates, alcohol or interacting medication. Talk to a healthcare professional before use.
